What Makes a Good Lawyer?
When I appeared on TMZ to discuss Kim Kardashian’s legal journey, I didn’t expect the segment to spark such a personal reflection. It prompted me to really think about what it means to be a good lawyer. It’s so much more than just passing the bar exam or knowing the law. It’s about how we show up and apply all the knowledge and studying we’ve worked so hard on. Being a lawyer requires a constant balancing act. We have to be logical and empathetic, prepared and flexible, confident and humble. It’s not just about what we know. It’s about how we use it to serve others.
Watch the video below where Attorney Gianna Colucci shares insights on what makes a good lawyer, then read on for a deeper dive into the qualities that matter most.
Why Become a Lawyer?
For many of us, the decision to pursue law isn’t just about career ambition. It’s about impact. I chose family law because I wanted to help people navigate some of the most emotionally charged moments of their lives with clarity, compassion, and strength. Whether it’s a custody dispute, a divorce, or a prenuptial agreement, these aren’t just legal issues. They’re deeply personal.
What Makes a Good Lawyer?
Here’s what I believe separates good lawyers from great ones:
Empathy and Listening: Clients aren’t just looking for legal advice. They’re looking for someone who understands their story.
Clarity and Communication: Legal jargon doesn’t help anyone. A good lawyer translates complexity into confidence.
Preparation and Precision: Every case deserves thorough research, strategic planning, and attention to detail.
Integrity and Advocacy: We’re not just here to argue. We’re here to advocate, ethically and effectively.
Adaptability and Growth: The law evolves. So should we. Whether it’s new legislation or new technology, staying sharp matters.
Lawyers Are Real People
I’m a lawyer, yes. But I’m also a daughter, a sister, a friend. I binge-watch courtroom dramas, I stress over deadlines, and I celebrate wins with my team. Appearing on TMZ reminded me that the public wants to see lawyers as relatable professionals. Not just suits behind desks. If you’re curious about my appearance, you can watch the TMZ YouTube Short on our channel.
